Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then located many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
