As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
