Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
